WWB Network Member Shakti Foundation Joins with Citi Foundation to Launch Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards in BangladeshWWB network member Shakti Foundation for Disadvantaged Women has joined with Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citi, to launch the first Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards program in Bangladesh. Begun in 2005 to promote microfinance as a poverty-alleviation tool worldwide, the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards program currently operates in more than twenty countries, including China, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, and Vietnam. The Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards recognize and publicize the role of individual microentrepreneurs in improving the economic conditions of their communities. For the third annual Awards, Citi expanded the program to Bangladesh, choosing Shakti Foundation for Disadvantaged Women as local sponsor. Dr. Humaira Islam, Founder and Executive Director of Shakti Foundation, was named a member of the advisory council. Winners included Barison Begum of Jessore, who won Best Microentrepreneur of the Year, Mossammat Rahima Begum of Satkhira, who won Best Woman Microentrepreneur, and Anwarul Islam of Jessore, who won Most Innovative Entrepreneur.
