WWB in the News

The New York Times featured Women's World Banking in a March 14 article on presidential candidate Barack Obama's mother, Ann Dunham Soetoro. The article, "A Free-Spirited Wanderer Who Set Obama's Path," mentions that the late Ms. Soetoro was an employee of WWB during the early 1990s, and quotes former WWB President Nancy Barry. Time Magazine featured WWB's working paper, "Stemming the Tide of Mission Drift: Microfinance and the Double Bottom Line," in the World section of its online magazine on April 17. The Time article, titled "Are Women Being Cheated?" asks the question that initially motivated WWB to begin collecting data on microfinance institutions as they transform to regulated financial institutions: "As microfinance moves more and more into the mainstream of the banking world, is some of its original mission getting lost in the shuffle?" The Jordan Times published an interview with WWB President and CEO Mary Ellen Iskenderian in its March 10 edition. The article, "WWB Head Sees Jordan as Laboratory for Microfunds," is available on the Jordan Times website.

The Indian Banker magazine published in its March issue an abridged version of WWB's Focus Note, "Rural Finance for Small Farmers: An Integrated Approach" by Hans Dellien and Elizabeth Lynch. Visit the WWB publications page to read the complete version of the article.

The Journal News of the Hudson Valley, New York, printed in its February 22 edition a story on WWB's sixth annual Microfinance and the Capital Markets Conference. The conference was co-hosted by Morgan Stanley, and took place at Morgan Stanley's Westchester campus in Purchase, New York. The article can be found in the archives of The Journal News.

Microfinance Insights magazine published an interview with WWB President Mary Ellen Iskenderian in its Vol. 6 - March 2008 issue. The article, titled "Sector Targets a Majority of Women, Employs a Minority," featured Ms. Iskenderian's thoughts on the employment of women in the microfinance industry.
