WWB Publications: New and Forthcoming

Stemming the Tide of Mission Drift: Microfinance Transformations and the Double Bottom Line, a Focus Note by Christina Frank, was published in April. The paper provides an overview of the process by which MFIs convert from NGOs into regulated financial institutions, and examines the impact of the transformation process upon a control group of MFIs tracked by WWB over the past five years, giving particular attention to the effect of transformation on MFIs' outreach to low-income women. Stemming the Tide of Mission Drift was released at the April 17 meeting of the Council on Foreign Relations, in New York City, on "The Commercialization of Microfinance." It has since been discussed in Time Magazine and in the MicroCapital Monitor.

Financiación Rural Para Pequeños Agricultores: Un Enfoque Integrado was published in March. Financiación Rural Para Pequeños Agricultores is the Spanish translation of Rural Finance for Small Farmers: An Integrated Approach, a Focus Note by Hans Dellien and Elizabeth Lynch, which was published in December, 2007. The paper outlines the steps a microfinance provider must take to expand responsively and sustainably into rural areas, and uses a case study of WWB's work helping ADOPEM Bank expand into rural markets in the Dominican Republic to give concrete examples of each of the key steps in the expansion process. It also includes a selection tool for determining appropriate regions for rural expansion, as well as loan assessment forms and other tools for evaluating potential rural farmer clients.

Marketing for Microfinance, by M. Yasmina McCarty, was published in February. A reference guide for microfinance organizations seeking to develop their marketing capabilities, Marketing for Microfinance describes in detail the steps involved in developing, implementing and monitoring a marketing strategy, and is grounded in real-life examples from microfinance organizations and banks around the world.

Coming soon: The Capacity of Poor Women to Grow their Businesses in Jordan, the next volume in WWB's Gender Study series, will be published in Summer, 2008.
