Angela: Client of Banco ADOPEM

WWB supports microfinance institutions around the world to ensure that their products and services meet the needs of poor women. Women like Angela. Angela started sewing when she was 13 and had a vision from childhood: “I always wanted to be someone in life, a person of talent, a woman of success.” Angela took her first loan of $300 from WWB’s network member ADOPEM in Dominican Republic to finance her dressmaking business in 1997. She didn’t have any assets for collateral, but guaranteed with her word that she would repay her loan.

Teaching Girls to Save

Being a girl in many parts of the world even in the 21st century is not easy. Many girls in the developing world leave secondary school before completion. Even if they complete school, their opportunities for economic independence are minimal, with options typically limited to working in the informal economy or marrying at an early age.
